Tips from Past Attempts

Art student Violet Gould working on her art piece for VASE.

VASE gives students a chance to submit their artworks to be scored and evaluated by judges. If the piece scores a four out of four, it advances to the final round and is judged again to possibly advance to state. Only the top 10% of artworks advance to state.

The art piece submitted will be seen along with hundreds of others and the works are graded on the elements and principles of art. The meaning of the art piece will also be graded based on how it flows with the art piece. Make sure it stands out and grabs people’s attention.

“I would recommend working on how your artwork is related to you as a person,” 2023 VASE artist Andy Jaramillo said. “Judges look for that sort of connection.”

The quality of your art matters, so time should be spent making the submission the best it can possibly be. Get critiques from people around you and think of new ideas and techniques to impress the judges.

“Pieces that go to state are one of a kind, you’ve never seen it before,” Mrs. Jones said. “Use as many elements and principles in your art piece.”

The piece needs a question as to why you made it. Stand Out! The more personal it is, the better.
