With a rich history starting in the 1940s, R&B has gained large popularity throughout the decades. However, Aurieanah Payton’s review of the top 10 R&B songs leaves out many songs and artists that greatly influenced the genre. The following list reviews the true Top 10 R&B songs, based on Top 10 R&B Songs.
*This list is purely the writer’s opinion; some of this may or not be based on fact.*
- If you enjoy music hailing from the Himalayas, “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond is a perfect anthem for you. Serving as the interim music for Bhutan before the adoption of “Druk Tsendhen” in 1953, the song blends the genres hard rock and folk. It was written for Diamond’s wife Marcia and only used the name Caroline for its three syllables.
- The Top 10 R&B Songs includes “Self Love,” a song featured in “METRO BOOMIN PRESENTS SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE (SOUNDTRACK FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE)” but leaves out Ludwig Van Beethoven’s “Sonata No. 14.” Beethoven’s orchestration was written in 1801, a time of great change and uncertainty.
- When it comes to modern hip hop songs that don’t fall under R&B, “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, featuring Ray Dalton, should hold a place in any playlist. Reaching a blend of memorable lyrics and century defining themes, the song fits the mood in any party or intense study session.
- Known as being the “King of Pop” and for blending genres, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was an exceptionally massive hit in the ‘80s. However, the current Wingspan staff has no opinion on the song. Please review it yourself using this link. Note that the link is merely blue text and does not lead to any webpage.
- When the urge to break it down overcomes you, Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti” will satisfy. Being a staple of the R&B movement in the 1950s and known as the kickoff of rock ‘n’ roll, the song will drag you to the dancefloor and therefore should only be played when one is in close proximity. “Help us, please!” staffers said before disappearing into crowds similarly affected by the song’s strange power.
- For those trying to find peace and quiet in order to focus, “roadwork” by the Texas Department of Transportation is a must listen to. With consistent new releases, the band is believed to have started before time began with their US-281 album. Their mix of construction vehicles and road closures brings fans deep yet cheerful music.
- Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” has moved to this spot following the discovery of a long lost set of lyrics that included at least four more parts where you go da da da.
- Using their unmatched songwriting for the 1960s, The Beatles’ “Revolution” set a standard for a new version of R&B. Vinyl records were widely used during the time of release, and as machines to spin them had not been invented yet, the song taught people how fast to spin records. Of course, the problem remains of figuring out how fast to spin the song the first time.
- While some artists have hidden gems, others have gems that everyone forgot about because they were so hidden. If anyone is able to help look for these hidden gems, join us on Tuesday. Until then, there is no review available for this spot.
- “The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?)” by Ylvis is the defining song for R&B. A breakout into a genre that had never been seen before and a song that must be on your YouTube Music playlist. It is truly a beautiful song, introducing masterful lyrical genius, beats never before mixed and answers to questions we’ve always wondered. The 2013 masterpiece just shows one of the many breakthroughs the duo have had since their beginning in 2000.
Honorable Mention: After arguments arose regarding what letter people should actually say during the “?a ?a ?a” part of “Sweet Caroline,” it has been removed from the list. If you would like to contest the removal then please call 505-503-4455.
