AVID III students recently went on a field trip to four different universities: Baylor University, Southwestern University (SWT), The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), and Texas Women’s University (TWU) to give students a chance to look at schools near Dallas.
“I wanted to go on the trip because I liked the idea of going overnight and staying in a hotel,” junior Beckham Bracken said. “I really enjoyed the new experience.”
The first day of the trip was spent primarily visiting the first three universities, Baylor, SWT and UTD, with a self-guided tour. Students spent some time in the gift shops, with $60 allowances. The transportation was done via charter bus, with AC and small TVs.
“The bus ride was really long and my legs hurt most of the time,” junior Lily Cannon said. “But when I sat with my friends it was fun. Me and Jazy watched funny shows and listened to music together.”
After visiting all the universities, Mrs. Delgado gave students their room keys and gave them time to change and settle in before dinner. Mrs. Delgado’s niece, an engineering student, made an appearance to talk to students about college life before the departure for BJ’s for dinner. A few students made announcements and a few students celebrated their birthdays over BJ Pizookies.
“The rooms were nice and comfortable,” Bracken said. “I had brought a Nintendo Switch and some leftover food from BJ’s so I and my roommates were chill for the rest of the night. The beds were surprisingly comfortable, so comfortable that my roommates and I almost missed the bus back home in the morning.”
On the second day, students were to be in the hotel lobby by 8:00 am to get Starbucks with Mrs. Fey. TWU was the only university visited on the second day and Buck-ee’s was visited as a halfway stop a few hours later, the final stretch back to the school lasted longer than previously thought due to traffic.
“The schools were genuinely great schools and the experience is one I will never forget,” Bracken said. “This is a great event for any rising juniors to be a part of next year.”
