With a new campus comes many changes. Brand new collaborative spaces, one-to-one computers and a new School Resource Officer, Mark Marquez.
“We’re very excited to have him on campus,” Associate Principal Daniel Horton said.
Marquez, who has been with the Bulverde Police Department for just over two years, is entering a new chapter in his law enforcement career.
“I’ve never really worked at a school before,” Marquez said. “It’s a different environment—more relaxed but still very focused on security. Honestly, it’s a bigger responsibility than a typical 12-hour shift because we’re responsible for so many important people.”
Even though it’s now the police work he is used to, Marquez’s focus remains clear.
“Our main priority is the safety of the students and the staff,” Marquez said.
For years in the old building, the high school and the middle school shared one SRO, Officer Alvaro Serna.
“We understand that he needed to stay and build relationships with Spring Branch and those middle schoolers, so it was important for him to continue to see those,” Horton said. “I think our new SRO, Officer Marquez, is working on building up those relationships so he can have the same kind of impact on the students and faculty.”
Despite the fresh setting, Marquez is quickly acclimating. He is not all work no play though, and has a unique hobby: precision shooting.
“Eventually, I’ll go into competition shooting,” Marquez said. “I do it for law enforcement, but I’ll probably start doing it for fun around November.”
As Officer Marquez continues to settle into his new role, his presence promises a continued focus on safety while fostering strong bonds with students and staff.
