For high school students, music is a core piece of their lives. In the mornings, some students have AirPods in and listen to music. They listen to a variety of songs, and some argue about which is the best music genre. The opinions vary from person to person because music connects with different people in different ways.
“When I was younger, I used to listen to more happy and upbeat songs,” sophomore Sara Herrera said. “Then I got older, and then I started listening to more sad songs.”
Despite many students connecting with the deep lyrics of sad songs, some find upbeat and pop music more fitting to their style.
“The lyrics don’t have as much weight as some…very depressing songs, since I can’t understand them,” sophomore Logan McDaniel said. “The lyrics are much simpler compared to other songs.”
Similarly to how some students have strict taste in lyrics, others like to listen to a variety of different music.
“I think I have more diversity,” sophomore Bilen Cronk said. “[I’m] more open to different styles of music.”
With such a wide variety of genres, many students struggle with picking just one song or even their favorite genre.
“I’m not good at picking favorite songs,” Herrera said, “I just love so many of them.”
Since there are so many genres and songs to choose from, students find that they connect with their friends through their music.
“As I got older, I made different friends who introduced me to different styles,” Cronk said. “Since I moved schools, I made new friends who introduced me to K-pop and its fandom.”
Sharing musical interests can help someone befriend others, so no matter what school one may go to or what interests one has, music can connect people.
“I think it’s all based on personal opinion on music, because music is a personal thing,” McDaniel said. “It’s different for each person.”
