Movies have been an important and impactful form of entertainment globally for over 100 years. However, recently, the lack of creativity in modern movies has reflected negatively, causing a lack of individuality among the viewers.
People should start supporting smaller studios that use new creative ideas, rather than supporting large studios that produce the same remakes and live-action films every time.
Out of the top 50 highest-grossing films in the last five years, only seven are not sequels, remakes or based on an existing franchise. An example is “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” which is the third movie in the “Avatar” series. While being a very successful movie, it still follows the same storyline as the previous two, with critics saying that the characters are doing the same thing just slightly different and worse.
Unfortunately, people are more likely to watch movies with characters and plots they know and love rather than new ideas. Hollywood has no lack of creativity; they just refuse to use it. In a 2010 IBM Global Survey of more than 1,500 CEOs from 60 countries and 33 industries worldwide, creativity was selected as the most crucial factor for future success. In America, the production of original movies has dropped to only 18.6% according to the Medium and its use has continued to decline for the past 36 years. When most of the movies being pushed out lack creativity more than the last, it affects this downward trend greatly.
With the rise in short-form content such as TikTok or Instagram reels, there has been a significant decline in appeal for long-form content and more appeal for things we know and love. Even when a movie that is not so mainstream is pushed as the “movie of the year” or the “next big thing,” these movies just end up in the back of people’s favorites or watchlists to make room for the movies that people are already familiar with. Though when people consume the same movies, it reduces critical thinking and weakens creativity in society.
Smaller studios are less restricted by large corporations like Disney and movie theater chains. Therefore, they are able to produce movies that might not always be what the public wants.
Stop limiting your mind with the same things you’ve seen a hundred times, and go support a small studio that has movies to inspire you, not quiet you.
