Everyone has a dream, and watching it come true can spark inspiration across a small campus. Sitting alone in her room, Jazmarlene Childers, a former student at Hill Country Preparatory High School, opened a letter that would change her life. Childers became the first student in our school history to be accepted into Harvard University.
At first, Childers was in disbelief that she got into Harvard. Harvard University is a school that several students dream about daily and strive for, with less than 4% of applicants getting accepted.
“It didn’t feel real,” Childers said. “It was something I dreamt of as a kid, but I didn’t expect it to happen. It felt like a roller coaster.”
The new experiences and environment at Harvard shook up her world, leading her to find growth in friendships, knowledge and confidence.
“I have become a lot more confident and comfortable trying new things and making new friends,” Childers said. “These people are extremely driven and inspiring.”
As Childers continues her journey at Harvard, she will never forget the unwavering support that has been given to her throughout her journey.
“My family, friends and the teachers at Hill Country are my biggest supporters, and there is no way I would’ve ever had the guts to apply without the amount of support I got,” Childers said.
Looking back on her journey, Childers hopes that her story will encourage others who may be chasing their dreams. “Anything is possible as long as you put the work in,” Childers said. “Success is preparation and chance coming together.”
